The first question that first time, Lake District vacationers ask themselves, or their travel consultants, is – what are the things to do in the Lake District. Trekking or hiking is a truly exhilarating experience however, if you choose a more leisurely and relaxed walk, there are well defined paths running parallel to both shorelines of many lakes in the Lake District. MOUNTAIN BIKING and CYCLING – Throughout its 34 mile length, and the easily accessible areas of its mountains, fells or forests, the Lake District offers some excellent mountain biking and cycling opportunities. The forests of Grizedale and Whinlatter have several routes, some of which are ideal for beginners, with others more challenging. This is true, because the Lake District offers some of the most stunning landscapes, as well as many species of wildlife. With the latest digital camera technology, just about anyone can capture such wildlife as ducks, geese, swans, ospreys, red squirrels, or even rare golden eagles in the Lake District. The same can be done to shoot pictures of some of the popular mountains, fells, lakes, historic homes and a vast variety of other nature-oriented subjects of the Lake District. For the fishing enthusiast, the Lake District offers some of the best fishing opportunities in the UK. This can be attributed to the abundance of fish species that can be found in all Lake District tarns, rivers, lakes and streams. Some popular fishing spots in the Lake District include Derwentwater, Buttermere and Crummock Water where you can fish for pike, trout, char or perch. However, the lake that is acknowledged as the best place for fishing in the Lake District is Windermere. The fish species that can be found in Windermere include eels, roach, brown trout, arctic char and perch. Insofar as water sports, there’s no better place to enjoy this activity than the Lake District. With fourteen beautiful lakes to choose from, you can enjoy such activities as windsurfing, water skiing, canoeing, sailing, kayaking, swimming and a lot more.
