Lake District Education
The Lake District Education system is presently similar to that of the United States, although it is also different in some significant ways, among them the certain types of classes are held in certain houses or cottages designated for a particular discipline. For example, arts and crafts are made and displayed is historical homes, while workshops are held in some museums. This is much more laidback than and hands-on that official academic institutions, although some official academic institutions do exist, such as the case for pre-school and nurseries, and even some secondary school. Lake District education is predominantly about heritage and culture, although traditional courses are conducted as well in language, mathematics, geography, and history.
Before 1990, secondary schools in the Lake District education system, not to mention the United Kingdom as a whole, was divided into six forms, starting with a student at age twelve and ending, usually, at age sixteen, although some students could go extra years in preparation for candidateship to Oxford and Cambridge Universities. This extended period was known as the sixth form, itself separated into two phases: Lower Sixth (Lower VTth) and Upper Sixth (Upper VIth). The Sixth Form, as a term applicable to an original status, is still maintained by various private and state schools, but most schools in the Lake District education system and throughout the country have changed to ‘years’. Since 1991, age five is introduced to ‘Year 1,’ twelve-year-olds are in ‘Year 7’, and sixteen-year-olds complete ‘Year 11’. The level once known as the Sixth Form combines ‘Years 12 & 13’ and is equivalent to the twelfth grade in the United States.
Lake District education is indeed an interactive system where learning can be quite fun, interesting and even challenging for the students. Lake District education even has an Outdoor Education Centre, which allows and encourages students maintain their bond with nature. Education always starts with nature, as so it should. That’s the charm about education in the Lake District.
