If you go south of Ambleside there you will find the Roman fort Galava, which dates all the way back to AD79. Also a great place to look into the history of Ambleside is the Armitt Library and Museum. To the west of town is Loughrigg Fell, which rises above the town, also if you go north you will find Red Screes and also the hills of Fairfield group, while the east you will find Wansfell.
