Helvellyn
Helvellyn is the third highest mountain peak in both the Lake District and England. Its elevation is 3,117 feet above sea level, and the Helvellyn range is the apex of the Eastern Fells. Helvellyn’s peak is the highest on the north-south ridge with Thirlmere valley to the west and Patterdale on the eastern side. The ridge then continues in a northward direction over Helvellyn Lower Man, White Side, Raise, Stybarrow Dodd, Great Dodd and Clough Head. Moving in a southern direction will bring you to Nethermost Pike and Dollywaggon Pike.
The fell’s eastern side has two sharp arêtes that project from the summit. These are known as Striding Edge and Swirral Edge and are located on either side of Red Tarn. Both provide a great attraction with Striding Edge providing one of the best scramblers in Lakeland and Spirral Edge leading visitors to the summit of Catstye Cam. Visitors will find tremendous views from both of these projections with the knife-sharp edge of Striding Edge probably being the more popular of the two.
Helvellyn’s summit is in the shape of a broad plateau that is approximately 1,640 feet long. The highest point includes a cairn as well as a dry stone shelter. There is an additional top called Helvellyn Lower Man approximately one third of a mile in a north easterly direction. Though the summit is smaller than Helvellyn’s plateau, it provides better views of the northwest are because of the way the ground falls on this side.
Scramblers and hikers who find themselves on Striding Edge must be very careful. This section of Helvellyn is a notorious accident spot with conditions described earlier in the year as the worst since 1978. There were two fatal accidents when walkers died after falling from the ridge within weeks of each other. There was another fatal accident in May, so if you are interested in walking to the summit of the Helvellyn range, you have to exercise extreme caution and make sure you know what to expect. With this in mind, it is a good idea for only experienced hikers and scramblers to travel the summit of the Helvellyn mountain range in to be certain those hikers and scramblers have enough experience to stay away from dangerous areas of Striding Edge
The views one can view from Helvellyn appeal to many campers. The preferred camping area is around the Red Tarn because it provides the best view of Striding Edge, Red Tarn and Helvellyn’s summit. There is a great deal of picturesque scenery that makes it a preferred camping spot all year long. If you decide to camp on Helvellyn you have to be careful of the weather. Because Helvellyn is a mountain range, the weather can change quickly with mist also creating a problem on occasion.
If you want to visit the Helvellyn Fells during your visit to the Lake District, you want to be certain to be cautious if you decide to hike to Striding Edge. You also want to make sure you follow any recommendations in the guidebooks and also have safety equipment with you in case of an emergency.
