Gilsland is a small and isolated village that straddles the border between Cumbria and Northumberland on Hadrian's Wall; steeped in history she makes an ideal location for holidays and days out in the North of England. Gilsland is reputed to have the cleanest air in England and is an ideal place to discover the history of the area as you enjoy and absorb the tranquility of the surrounding countryside. Gisland is a fantastic location with lots of roman archaeological sites and endless tourist attractions with extensive views across an unspoiled landscape, magnificent hotels and manors, some of the finest Country Houses and boutique cottages scattered all about.
You can cycle, walk or play a round of golf. Nearby Gilsland Spa is famous for its sulphurous spa waters, where people flocked for centuries to take the waters. Today chalybeate and sulphur springs still rise from the rocks which you can explore. Visit the 'Popping Stone’, a group of three rounded sandstone boulders, of disputed antiquity.
Bamburgh Castle or Alnwick Castle and the surrounding town are also a great destination for a fun day out. Irthing River after flowing through Gilsland, is lined with sites from Roman Britain, including Birdoswald Fort, at the top of the steep gorge carved out by the river; well worth a look at. For added excitement look out for THE GHOST - A ghost known as the 'Gilsland Boy' who manifests itself near the Roman Wall. Throughout Gilsland you will find excellent service and hospitality as you dine in local cafes, inns, pubs and hotels, quench your thirst, and try the delicious meals, snacks and homemade produce.
