Flookburgh
Named for the flat-headed fish that often can be found in the nearby lakes; the village of Flookburgh, is a small and busy town. Locals for years have made their living gathering shrimp and cockle from the nearby Morecambe Bay. For those that visit the area and decide to make Flookburgh a stop on their holiday; they too, can indulge in some of the tastiest shrimp in England; known for its brilliant texture and taste. Today, locals still sell the shrimp from the Flookburgh market square; however, much of it is shipped to the nearby city of Ulverston where it is prepared and sold to retail stores. Besides taking in some good eats while your in Flookburgh; you may be interested in seeing one of the area’s local landmarks; Humphrey Head, the tallest limestone cliff in all of Cumbria. Another popular point of interest is the Flookburgh village’s local well- believed once to contain “healing” water, it has been said that throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, miners and travelers alike would visit the well and partake in the water. There are several local accommodations for those travelers wishing to spend a few days in the Flookburgh village; most are century old homes located on the main street in Flookburgh. The area hosts several festivals throughout the summer months including a charter festival in June and the annual Cumbria Steam Gathering in July. Flookburgh is a beautiful place to visit anytime of year; the area offers amazing scenery and pleasant walks along the bay and river’s edge.
