Egremont
The town of Egremont is very rich in history; dating back for over 1000 years; much earlier than the town’s charter given to them by Henry III in 1267. Many historians even date Egremont’s origins prior to the Norman conquest of England. Regardless, the town’s rich history can be seen in the remains of what has became known as the “Cursed” castle. You see, in Egremont stands the remnants of the Egremont castle; a 150 year quest started by William le Meschines and subsequently passed down and fought over throughout the years. Over time, the superstition began that no male heir should ever inherit Egremont Castle due to the conduct of their forefathers. Today, those that visit the area can still see what is left of the Egremont castle; however, it was believed that in the early 15th Century- much of the stone from the castle was used to build and front the homes throughout the town of Egremont; as well as, the market square. Today, those that visit can walk down the long street of Egremont and view these 15th Century dwellings- ending at the local market square. The outskirts of the Egremont community is and was very much a farm community dating back for hundreds of years. Those that live and work in the area often grow their own foods and sell them at local markets. In the past, Egremont was also a booming mining town for iron ore; all but one of these mines has closed over the years. Interesting enough, the only working mine in England sits in the town of Egremont- today, it employees only a few workers; the mine produces hematite and ore.
