Dollywaggon Pike

Dollywaggon Pike is a mountainous region in the Lake District. This range is located on the main area of the Helvellyn range of the Eastern Fells. There tends to be a variation between Dollywaggon and Dollywagon on several series of maps. Author Alfred Wainwright referred to Dollywaggon Pike in his Pictorial Guide as did a number of other writers. Whether it’s Dollywaggon or Dollywaggon Pike, it is certainly a range full of adventure and beautiful scenery.
Unlike the Hellvyn range that remains about 2,000 feet throughout its entire seven mile length, Dollywaggon Pike is the lowest range of the ridge. You will also notice an additional top that lies between Nethermost and Dollywaggon Pikes. This region is called High Crag and sets at an altitude of 2,000 feet but because there is so little space between the two, guidebooks usually refer to High Crag as part of Nethermost Pike. Like most mountains in the Hellvyn range, there is a noticeable contrast between the western and eastern slopes encompassing Dollywaggon Pike. While the eastern slopes tend to be full of rock and stone fragments the western side of Dollywaggon Pike is comprised of many grassy areas.
The first impression one will have when viewing the eastern side of Dollywaggon Pike is the abundance of rock that it contains. It sets between two coves whose ridge is full of fine rock formations. The Tongue as this region is known contains a series of rocky steps that allows a walker to reach the summit of the ridge. The bottom of The Tongue contains Spout Crag which stands above Grisedale Beck and forces walkers to take a detour away from the edge of the ridge. If you head north of Dollywaggon Pike the ridge will begin to narrow and then reach high above High Crag until it reaches the plateau of Nethermost Pike.
The series of ranges that surround Dollywaggon Pike can make for an adventuresome walk for those who have both the time and energy to invoke into this kind of adventure. Dollywaggon Pike contains a series of both rocky and grassy slopes yet the views you can see as you overlook the mountain ranges are nothing less of spectacular. The experienced walker may wish to engage in some of the more difficult slopes of Dollywaggon Pike while the inexperienced walker/climber may wish to remain on some of the easier and grassier slopes.
A trek to Dollywaggon Pike is nothing short of a once in a lifetime adventure. That doesn’t mean you will not wish to repeat the adventure, but the first trip to Dollywaggon Pike will always be the one that remains in your memory for a longer period of time. As you become more experienced in walking the ridgeline of Dollywaggon Pike, the trek will become less exciting but yet still an adventure in which you will wish to participate whenever you have the chance. Between Dollywaggon Pike and the surrounding ranges you will never find yourself short of a new adventure.
