Cumwhitton
The town of Cumwhitton is a small farming village just outside the larger and more historical town of Carlisle. In recent years, however, the town of Cumwhitton has gained popular notoriety. In 2004, a group of archeologists discovered a 10th Century Viking burial site; believed to be the largest in all of England. The graves of 4 men and 2 women were discovered along with treasure, swords, spears and jewelry. Currently, the treasures and items discovered in Cumwhitton can be viewed at a nearby museum in Carlisle.
The quiet and charming town of Cumwhitton is home to many historical dwellings, including many mid-century churches and buildings. The town is also home to a very charming inn located in the heart of the town. The inn features a wide range of cuisine; as well as, the best ale in the area.
For those that like to relax in the countryside and enjoy the quiet calmness of rural life; you will most likely find Cumwhitton a wonderful place to visit. There are several trails and cycling paths that offer wonderful views of the outlying areas. As well, the town of Cumwhitton is home to many small shops owned and operated by local residents; many feature local crafts and artisan’s work.
Unlike the neighboring towns that are filled with holiday goers and crowds of tourists; Cumwhitton offers character and intrigue in another light; it features wonderful landscaped gardens, homes that have sit for centuries, and welcoming locals.
