Cockermouth
The town of Cockermouth is named for its geographical location; the town itself sits near the River Cocker where the mouth of the River Derwent meets. Although a very beautiful seaside town, being on the northwest fringe of the Lake District does have its advantages; the town is very tranquil and crowds can be avoided. For those that visit the neighboring town of Keswick, you’ll find a much more serene atmosphere in Cockermouth. For nearly two centuries, the town of Cockermouth was virtually unchanged, however, the town has recently seen many renovations; including an updated town Market Place featuring local artisans and community activities. For those visiting the town of Cockermouth, however, there are still many signs of the eras of yesterday. Cockermouth is lined with trees and late 17th and 18th Century terraced homes; as well, there are many cobblestoned streets that rind in and around the River Cocker. For those that enjoy tranquil walks along the river Cocker or perhaps scenic cycle paths that twist in and around the river side- you will most likely love the calmness of Cockermouth. Today, those that visit the area enjoy theatre, international music, and world cinema; located at one of the town’s premier cultural buildings. As well, those that visit will find accommodations along the river quiet comfortable and picturesque. Many of the small cottages once occupied by dye-workers are now being used as tourist accommodations for those visiting the area; as well, the town offers many finer establishments for your overnight needs.
