Cleator

The town known as Cleator has long been associated with mining and milling.  For centuries, those residing in and around Cleator have made their livings working the hematite mines or finding solace as mill operators in the flax and thread spinning industry.  The town that once boasted of only a few hundred residents has grown into a small metropolitan city with nearly 10,000, however, the borders that separate Cleator and Cleator Moor are quietly fading into oblivion.  Most of those that call the area home are Cleator Moor residents; still a few claim ties to the old but forgotten town of Cleator.
There are several age old church’s throughout the area, as well as one dating back to King Henry I reign.  Throughout the area, churches and sanctuaries dawn the cobblestone streets of Cleator.  As well, the ancient Roman Road passes through the township of Cleator, a reminder of much earlier times, dating back to BC2000-600.  Other popular tourist sites include, Longland’s Lake, a once working iron ore mine; as well, the town hall in Cleator erected in 1877.
For those looking for accommodations in and around Cleator; there are many country homes that are locally owned and operated available for overnight stays.  Many of these feature well-groomed gardens with Italian sculpture and fountains; as well as, views of Solway Firth, the coastal waters that border England and Scotland.  The town also hosts many local pubs, some of which have been around for centuries.
