Carlisle
The largest settlement in the Cumbria region of England is known as Carlisle. The city of Carlisle has much historical reference in England; the town itself was once a military stronghold for Northern England due to the Anglo-Scottish border that sits near; today, the remnants of Carlisle Castle can still be seen by those that visit the area. Modern day Carlisle is home to the main campus for the University of Cumbria; the town is home to nearly 72,000 residents, much of which is college students and faculty. For those wishing to visit the area, it is still a very quiet and hospitable town that couples age-old tradition with modern industry and culture. And although modernized in many ways with shopping centers and fine arts centers, the town of Carlisle does still maintain much of its historical character. There are several important points of interest for those visiting the Carlisle area; besides Carlisle Castle- one may find the old Town Hall or the Victorian covered market a great place to spend an afternoon. As well, the town of Carlisle has several museums that feature exhibits and paintings from world renowned artisans. As the capital city of Cumbria, the town of Carlisle has much to offer visitors. There are many Bed and Breakfast accommodations throughout the area that feature century old buildings; as well as, hotels and self-catering apartments and cottages. For those wishing to enjoy the history and modern-day entertainment of Carlisle; you’ll find much to do and see.
