Bowness-on-Windermere
Bowness-on-Windermere is a tourist town located on the shore of Windermere approximately halfway along the 12 mile stretch of the lake. Bowness-on-Windermere developed following the opening of the railway line in 1847 because it was the nearest accessible point on Windermere lake. Bowness-on-Windermere is the most popular tourist destination in Cumbria and keeps the town busy for most of the year. Tourists arrive to sail on the lake or participate in water sports while others just want to relax and enjoy the atmosphere that surrounds the area. All throughout Bowness-on-Windermere you can see the Victorian influence. In the late 19th century wealthy businessmen built large residences that overlooked the lake, and many of these are now being used as hotels while other houses are being used for other purposes. For those who enjoy sailing or other water activities, many of the hotels in Bowness-on-Windermere are located close to or on the lake. If you’re not a fan of water activities, you have the option to sit and enjoy the view that surrounds the lake. Of course not everyone enjoys the view from the lake and would prefer doing something with more speed to it, so Bowness-on-Windermere also a shopping district with shops, restaurants, pubs and other attractions for you to enjoy. You can window shop, browse or find some of the things you want to take home. If you become tired sit and relax at one of the restaurants or pubs before you continue with the rest of your shopping trip.
